Chapter Fifteen

“So, really,” Jasan said as he pulled his axe out of a woman’s forehead, “you’re saying that, given the chance, you wouldn’t want to have that kind of sense of smell?”

Jasan stood up straight and balanced his axe on his shoulder as he looked back at Beni. He could see his friend rolling a thought around his head. They had known each other for so long, but Jasan was still perpetually surprised by his answers. The way that he thought, it was so different from Jasan. Being raised on a farm, he didn’t have many friends, never had time for them. So when Beni took the time to show him the ropes of working for Mr. Sakamoto, they became fast friends. Most of their conversations centered around what-if’s and hypothetical medical advances.

“I don’t know,” Beni said with a shrug. He shook his head as he flung the blood from the head of his hammer. “I mean..yeah, ok, it would be cool in some ways. But ya know, there’s a lot of things that I don’t like to smell with my own sense of smell. I imagine it wouldn’t be much better for a dog.”

“Well, yeah,” Jasan said, shrugging and seeing the point in his argument, “but you would be born with it. So, like, you’d kinda be used to it.”

“Hm,” Beni said, still shaking his head, “Yeah I still don’t know.”

Jasan looked around at all the dead bodies. This was the third nest they had broken into this week. He wondered how Beni kept finding them. His friend was tight lipped and refused to tell even Sophie.

Every company of assassins in the city had several groups that worked under them. Beni, Jasan, and Sophie formed one of the most formidable groups in the whole city. Of course, no one except for the company head knew the true identities of the assassins working for them. Every group was chosen and placed for their unique abilities and talents together. Not all of them got on as well as their group. Jasan liked to think that part of the reason they were so effective as a team was because they were also so close as friends.

Each assassin team had it’s own hideout, a nest as they had come to be known. A place where they grouped and regrouped when they had a job to do. A safe home that they could stay at if the heat was ever on them for a particularly messy or high profile job. Most of them were chosen for the exact reason that they were nearly impossible to locate except for to those that already knew where they were. But here lately, Beni had been finding them with far too much frequency. Not that Jasan minded, especially because they were from the rival company run by Nikolai. While they weren’t getting paid for each kill, it did clear out the competition and give them something fun to do in the middle of all this MADness that was going around.
